The iPhone and virtualization software hold sway in this issue, with Rich Mogull sharing the story of how he used his iPhone to avoid sleeping on an airport floor, Chris Pepper passing along methods of sending SMS messages for free, and David Strom comparing five applications for transferring files to an iPhone. On the virtualization front, last week saw both the release of Parallels Desktop 4.0 and our latest ebook, Joe Kissell’s “Take Control of VMware Fusion 2.” The rest of the issue is a grab bag: Glenn Fleishman looks at a new laptop recovery utility and the release of Safari 3.2, and Adam explains how he figured out how to make VoiceOver read an important button in the Take Control cart. In the TidBITS Watchlist, we cover Firefox 3.0.4, Coda 1.6, PDFpen 4.0.2, iLife Support 8.3.1, and NeoOffice 2.2.5 Patch 3. Finally, please welcome our latest sponsor, MacSpeech, and note that the next issue of TidBITS will appear 01-Dec-08.

We can’t be the only ones asking ourselves: is it really November already? We’ve had a busy year, and as we push toward the end of 2008 and prepare for Macworld Expo in January, we’re going to recuperate next week and celebrate the Thanksgiving holiday in the United States.
We won’t be asleep the entire time, of course – we just can’t help ourselves. We’ll no doubt continue to post to the TidBITS Web site. Check back at the site or subscribe to the our RSS feed or Twitter stream to keep up with everything we’re writing.
There are low-percentage possibilities of a virus affecting your computer software, and across the board, they are almost nil. You could get a free virus scan software utility and see if there are any known or partially know items in your system: ClamXav - freeware (anti) virus checker for Mac OS X: There likely is some other issue behind this problem. One item to note and consider, if you are running the system noted in the signature line of your post here, you should update the OSX to the last version of Tiger (10.4.11) using the Combo file; and then go about repairing disk permissions via Disk Utility, then go further, with Security Update; then upgrade Java, Quicktime, Safari, iTunes. And see about updating your internet browsers re: ones other than Safari: Firefox 3.0.x, Opera, Camino, etc. Depending on the computer hardware type, if you have an Intel Mac, there may also be some firmware updates or other parts which may not even show in the computer's Software Update utility. And if you use Software Update to look for the necessary parts, you need not install them all at one time; you should put in the important parts first, the standalone Combo 10.4.11 is one.

And the other parts, one or two at a time. When updating or installing new applications or other software, to repair disk permissions in Disk Utility, after each short interval is best; since that can catch a minor glitch before you start using the computer. Also, to start up in SafeBoot (shift-key held down during the start or restart event, and continue until a Login screen appears) then use Disk Utility's 'repair disk permissions' is better. Then when that is done, restart the computer normally. To have and use AppleJack utility tool and/or OnyX utility interface tool - it helps you use what is already hiding in the OS, without the need to boot into single user or terminal for some minor maintenance, and have one or the other run their feature set of semi-automatic set- tings - Automation in OnyX; check all boxes, restart or set OnyX pref- erences to re-start when done by itself) is a way to chase gremlins.
Hopefully this helps somewhat. Good luck & happy computing!

Apple issues quartet of iLife '08 updates By Tuesday, July 22, 2008, 02:20 pm PT (05:20 pm ET) Apple on Tuesday afternoon released four patches for its iLife '08 creative suite that touch on iMovie, iPhoto, iWeb, and the supporting infrastructure. ILife Support 8.3 Apple's most universal of the new updates, iLife Support 8.3 is said to improve the stability of the framework that underpins iLife '08 as well as address a handful of other, smaller issues. This update, along with the others released on Tuesday, requires either Mac OS X Tiger 10.4.11 or any version of Mac OS X Leopard, and also needs QuickTime 7.5. IMovie 7.1.4 Apple's consumer video editor has been updated to version 7.1.4. The fix addresses unspecified compatibility problems as well as stability and other fixes. IPhoto 7.1.4 The only update in the collection to add more than just fixes, iPhoto 7.1.4 adds a new set of themes for both holiday greeting cards and postcards for those who use them with Apple's Kodak-supported printing service.
Compatibility, stability, and other fixes are described as part of the release. IWeb 2.0.4 The final update of the collection, iWeb 2.0.4 mends compatibility, stability, and other components of Apple's visually-driven web page creation tool.
